I recently finished Just Kids, Patti Smith's brilliant memoir about her relationship with Robert Mapplethorpe in their early days as struggling artists in New York, and right now I'm reading RZA's autobiography, The Tao of Wu. Many great men have left paths for us. Often regarded as one of the most intriguing figures in hip-hop, The RZA has been known to break the mold during his lengthy and successful career. If a 32 year old white librarian from Salt Lake City can find something beautiful in The Tao of Wu, anyone can. A brilliant work from a seriously creative and curious mind. Currently Reading: The Tao of Wu by The Rza. Yesterday I received a preview copy of The Tao of Wu, a “spiritual memoir” in which Wu-Tang Clan producer RZA offers up pearls of wisdom. Still a good book for any non hip hop listeners. This is RZA's (of Wu Tang) new piece. The Tao Te Ching strongly emphasizes the importance of acting for the sake of the activities, and not for ulterior motives. For this reason you might say not-forcing is the second principle of the Tao – the spontaneous or of-itself-so activity (tzu-jan) being the first. The RZA has done it again, if you ever wanted to know what drove him to be The RZA, then pick up this book. I love stories about people who take themselves from very bad situations and rise like a pheonix. The Tao of Wu is kind of like the sequel to RZA's first book, The Wu-Tang Manual, but it goes a lot deeper. In his new book, Hip-Hop Artist the RZA provides creative fodder for seekers around the world: "Any way you can reach self-enlightenment or self-worth works. The Taoist principle of wu wei is based on this idea (Kardash 1998, 1). If I ever had to recommend a book to someone, it would be The Tao of Wu.
